It's not expected - but your support is appreciated

We all like to be paid for our work and expertise and there are costs involved with running these challenges. If you have gotten value from them, please consider making a small monthly donation to help. The equivalent cost of coffee and cake once a month is very much appreciated.

Current Challenge: Quiet

Your challenge is to make an image with a sense of quiet about it. You can have any subject you like, but what I'm looking for is an ambience of quiet and calm.

This is not an easy challenge. For example you might be photographing a sunset and it may indeed be quiet around you, but how will you convey that visually to a viewer who wasn't there? The quiet has to come from the image itself, instilling a sense of calmness to anyone who looks at it.

Top Tips

  • Incorporate Space Around the Subject: Use negative space to isolate your subject, creating a feeling of solitude and introspection. This space acts as a visual pause, allowing the viewer to focus on the quiet moment you’ve captured.
  • Compose with Intention: Ensure your composition is free from distracting elements. Be mindful of the background and edges of your frame to ensure nothing detracts from the peaceful moment you’re capturing.
  • Capture Authentic Moments: Look for genuine moments of quiet and reflection. This could be someone sitting calmly by a window, a solitary figure walking through a misty landscape, or a person lost in thought. Authenticity resonates in photography, and these genuine moments of stillness can evoke powerful emotions in the viewer.
  • Long Exposures: You can smooth water and clouds, creating a serene and timeless quality in landscape photos. Or maybe a person serenely still and lost in thought with a rush of humanity swirling round them.

  • Pay Attention to Colour: Muted, pastel, or monochromatic colours can enhance the sense of quiet in an image. Bright prime colours can energise a scene, so opt for softer tones that encourage the viewer to pause and reflect, adding to the overall feeling of calm and stillness.
