Street Photography Workshop - Brighton
One Day Workshop
2026 dates coming soon.
Leave your details below and I'll let you know
This 1-day workshop in Brighton, UK is crafted for photographers keen on deepening their understanding of street photography through the exploration of visual storytelling, human interaction, and decisive moments. The art of patience and observation will be key themes, encouraging photographers to wait for just the right alignment of elements.
The core objective is twofold: to enhance participants' ability to see potential photographic opportunities by focusing on light, shape and form within the urban landscape and to grow confidence in photographing in public.
Participants will be guided through techniques to better utilise natural and city light to define subjects and set the mood of their images. The workshop will also cover the essentials of crafting compelling compositions, emphasising how to balance visual elements to create photographs that draw the viewer into a story.
Set against the backdrop of Brighton's diverse and dynamic streets, this workshop is more than just a learning experience; it's an opportunity to see the city through a new lens, uncovering hidden narratives and capturing life as it unfolds on the sidewalks and corners of the metropolis.
Street portraiture
Unlike broader street photography, which often documents candid moments, scenes, and the overall ambience of urban life without necessarily interacting with the subjects, street portraiture typically involves some level of engagement between the photographer and the subject.
This interaction can range from a simple acknowledgement to a more profound connection, allowing the photographer to direct the subject to some extent. The intent is to delve deeper into the individual's story or character, which adds a layer of depth and personal narrative to the images.
Develop confidence
confidence in oneself, alongside one's camera skills, is vital in street photography because it directly influences the ability to capture authentic, spontaneous moments.
Street photography often requires quick decisions and reactions to fleeting situations. A confident photographer is more likely to approach subjects with assurance, navigate public spaces assertively, and creatively frame shots without hesitation.
Feedback
Back of camera feedback on images will enable participants to improve in real-time, refining their skills on the spot. This approach aims to foster a loop of shooting, reviewing, and adjusting, accelerating the learning process.
Levels
All levels and camera types are welcome. A basic ability to control exposure and focus is all you need. Anything above that is an advantage.

Your tutor
Hi, I'm Mike Browne, a storyteller by nature who's always loved documentary styles of photography. I guess it's the ultimate people watching which, when combined with great light, composition and a few technical skills is the foundation for recording magical moments frozen in time.
Street and Street portraiture are great opportunities not only for photos, but also to meet interesting new people. Some of our 'subjects' have ended up becoming friends. There's truth to the saying 'a stranger is a friend you've not met yet'.
I've been a professional photographer since 1993 and have concentrated on teaching photography since 2010. Since then I have and continue to lead photography tours and workshops from Asia to Iceland. Most recently returning from Morocco, Spain and Switzerland.
With hundreds of 5 star reviews on Google and Trustpilot, it's incredibly fulfilling to know that I've played a part in engendering so many 'Light-bulb' moments, helped photographers become more confident and better able to reach whatever goals they have for their photography.
(This workshop was initially to be partnered with my friend and colleague Rob Irving who has unfortunately had to withdraw.)
