Panama Through The Lens 2027

A photographic journey through the heart of Panama

2nd -11th April 2027 (8 days, 9 nights)

With Mike Browne and Essdras Suarez

Panama is an extraordinary destination for photographers. Within a relatively small country we'll encounter an enormous variety of subjects, from tropical rainforest and wildlife to indigenous culture, historic architecture, mountain landscapes and one of the world's great feats of engineering, the Panama Canal.

Who's it for?

Photographers of all skill levels will capture fantastic images while elevating your skills with on-location coaching from myself and x2 Pulitzer and RFK award winning Panamanian photographer Essdras. This workshop is more than just a learning experience; it's an opportunity to dedicate time to your passion and explore this fascinating country with x2 mentors, one of whom who has invaluable knowledge and insight being Panamanian himself.

What will we do?

Panama is an extraordinary destination for photographers because within a relatively small country we'll encounter an enormous variety of subjects, from tropical rainforest and wildlife to indigenous culture, historic architecture, mountain landscapes and one of the world's great feats of engineering, the Panama Canal.

We'll explore the lowland rainforest around Gamboa, photograph tropical birds and wildlife along the renowned Pipeline Road, travel by boat across Gatun Lake and spend time with an Embera indigenous community, learning about their traditions, culture and way of life. There will also be opportunities to photograph monkeys, toucans, sloths and other wildlife within this remarkably bio-diverse environment.

From the rainforest we travel into Panama's cooler western highlands around Boquete and Cerro Punta. Here the photographic possibilities change completely, with cloud forest, misty mountain landscapes, hummingbirds and other highland species, coffee plantations, local producers and thoroughbred horses set against lush countryside.

We'll also experience the Panama Canal from several very different perspectives, including travelling its waters amongst huge cargo ships and gaining close-up access to the lock system at Miraflores. Back in Panama City we'll photograph the contrast between its modern skyline and historic Casco Antiguo, along with Frank Gehry's striking Biomuseo and the waterfront around the Amador Causeway.

Panama Through The Lens isn't simply a photographic tour.

Essdras and I will be with you throughout, helping you recognise opportunities, work with the available light, strengthen composition and think about how individual photographs work together to tell the story of a place. With our very different photographic backgrounds and ways of seeing, you'll have two experienced photographers to learn from, bounce ideas off and ask for help whenever you need it.
The aim isn't simply to return home with photographs of Panama. It's to become a more confident, thoughtful photographer while experiencing and photographing a remarkable country.

His work as a speaker and educator is rooted in decades of lived experience and a firm belief that photography helps us understand the world - and ourselves - with greater clarity.

I'm Mike Browne, a professional photographer, teacher and presenter with a career spanning more than 30 years. I've been described by 500px as the UK's friendliest photography expert, and helping people discover how to see and think like photographers has become a huge part of my life.

My YouTube photography channel has attracted more than 26 million views and 260,000 subscribers, and I've taught thousands of photographers through workshops, courses and mentoring.

My work has received numerous awards, including three Xposure International Photography Festival awards, Kodak Gold, Fuji photography awards and 14 Master Photographers Association awards.

I've exhibited with the Royal Photographic Society, Master Photographers Association, The Romanian Embassy in London and Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah UAE. I've spoken at major photography events including The Photography Show and Xposure.

Despite all that, what matters most to me is helping someone experience that wonderful 'lightbulb moment' when something they've struggled with suddenly comes clear.

And when I'm not teaching? You'll probably find me exploring somewhere on an old motorcycle.
