Light, Lenses and Composition
Join me for a great day in a lovely location - devoted to getting you better photos
There are beautiful images all around us all the time - the trick is being able to see and execute them.
There are three things that’ll improve your photography 100% - understanding light, composition and choosing the right lens (or zoom) for the shot you’re taking. And best of all you don’t need an expensive camera to do it.
It doesn’t matter what camera you have, join us for this relaxed fun photography workshop, meet like-minded people and gain knowledge and experience to capture beautiful images anywhere. Beginners welcome.
I'll be on hand for you all day helping, coaching and guiding you. Maximum of 10 people per workshop so I have time for everyone.
During winter we have the place more or less to ourselves, the sun is lower in the sky and the light is fantastic. With opportunities for moody skies, brightly coloured beach huts, abstract and close up detail images. Sunset is earlier in winter and there are are often beautiful colours reflected across the harbour against which we can silhouette and isolate boats.
Although it can be chilly the place is very quiet from November so we have photo opportunities which aren't there in summer and the cafes are still open for a warming hot chocolate.
Very inspiring. I understand so much more, but know there's loads more to learn. Bring It On!!
Very enjoyable day and an excellent tutor made things simple to understand
Excellent day - even when the weather was rubbish I learned so much
9.30 am: Meet and greet in front of The Haven House Inn
9.45 am: Tutorial session includes
- Why cameras get it wrong
- Controlling exposure
- Light - it's more important than anything else
- Simple strategies for amazing compositions
- How to use different lenses and zooms for brilliant photos
By the end of the morning you’ll have learnt to manage all these things. There’ll be lots of hands on training and we’ll explore the area to find great images everyone can shoot for themselves.
1.00pm: Lunch (not included): This will be in the pub or café and is a great opportunity to chat about photography, compare images from the morning and ask questions.
2.00pm: Practical Learning: Time to take pictures and put what we did in the morning into practice. We’ll nip over to the Headland opposite the quay with its beach huts, views of the Quay, Needles Rocks and Christchurch Harbour. I’ll be on hand throughout to mentor, coach and answer questions.
5.00pm: Finish: Everyone heads for home with some great pictures and lots of new skills.
Mudeford Quay is a beautiful location on the Hampshire / Dorset border at the mouth of Christchurch harbour. Opposite is the headland of Hengistbury Head with it's sandy beaches and beautiful brightly painted beach huts. Looking inland are picturesque views of the harbour and Mudeford Quay so there are plenty of photo opportunities.
With it's easily accessible road links, plenty of parking and stunning scenery it's the perfect place for a photography workshop. Check out the images below.
- Easy to get to
- Plenty of car parking - costs £10
- Toilet facilities
- A pub and two cafés for refreshments (not included)
The ferry to Hengistbury Head takes 10 mins and costs £1.30 each way.
Whatever the weather there are always images to be captured. Bring waterproof clothing, a clear plastic bag and elastic band for your camera and an umbrella is also a good idea.
There are plenty of places to stay nearby from Bed and Breakfasts to 5 star luxury at The Chewton Glen Hotel should you want to treat yourself. There's a list on the Highcliffe and Mudeford Guide website.
Avon Breeze Guest House. It's right at the entrance to Mudeford Quay and owner Sally is a keen photographer who's been on the workshop herself.
It's a great place with loads of photo opportunities whatever the weather.
