Mike Browne has a down to earth approach when it comes to learning photography. Practice using ordinary, everyday objects. That is what he is showing in his free videos.
Make sure you get the composition, light, depth of focus right when the scenery isn't that exciting. If you can do that without thinking too much, you will also get it right when the scenery is beautiful. That is what I learned from his course "The 7 building blocks of photography", and I found out that it is true.
You get assignments because photography is alike playing a musical instrument: only through practice you will improve.
