Street Photography Pt. 5

Street photography is really about the people. Quirky moments, expressions, interaction and humour are all recipes for traditional street photography. Cartier Bresson coined the phrase 'decisive moment' to describe the instant when something interesting happens and is ready to be captured.

Finding this moment when your farily new to street photography is a tall order for a beginner so I suggest you stick with some candid documentary photos for now. (See other films in this series in the menu on right).

This time lets get the long lens out and go looking for human interaction which can be isolated from the surroundings because of the long focal length's shallow depth of field and narrow field of view (See focal length explained 1). A wide aperture helps separate people from their surroundings by blurring the background just enough for separation - but still showing enough detail you know where they are.
