Street Photography Pt. 4
Street photography is really about the people. Quirky moments, expressions, interaction and humour. But when you're starting out the thought of taking photos of strangers can be very intimidating for someone new to the genre.
A good way to ease yourself into street photography is to ask permission from a market trader to spend a bit of time on their stand with them and shoot some documentary images of them at work interacting with each other and their customers.
Before you begin it's wise to select the best lens for the situation and get your camera set up so you can concentrate on the photography and not be messing about with settings.
For this street photography shoot I got permission to photograph Gary and his family on their burger van on a busy Saturday market. First I took some test shots to find out how much light there was so I could set up the aperture and ISO so the camera would get the correct exposure. I used aperture priority (AV) mode so I could set the depth of field and the camera would take care of the shutter speed. By taking test shots in the darkest areas first I could set up the camera so I knew there's be no camera shake during the shoot.
When someone gives you permission to shoot street photography around them always be respectful. Remember they are there to make a living so don't get in their way and always give them some images in return.
