What is 'The 7 Building Blocks of Photography'?

The "7 Blocks" links the technical and creative aspects of photography. Learn how to think each image through and achieve photos you're proud of.

It's the thought process I use for every image. By thinking things through one step at a time you can find the best light, composition, lens and camera settings for any image you want to take.

Each weekly tutorial teaches one of the 7 blocks and week by week explains and demonstrates how to assemble them in order to 'build' an image. I recommend you set aside 2-3 hours a week for it. The more you practise the quicker it will become a subconscious process, like breathing.

Your Camera Really Does Need YOU

I'm always amazed at my student's knowledge but they don't know how to connect that knowledge creatively, easily and subconsciously. They often panic and put the camera on Auto. But cameras are not creative.  Cameras will only record what you tell them to and make their best guess according to pre-programmed parameters.

If you can't think like a photographer it's impossible to BE a photographer. Complete The 7 Building Blocks of Photography and you will access (and add to) your knowledge of composition, lenses, light etc and be able to take the actions you need to take for virtually any image and situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our 7 week courses FAQ section will answer any other queries. There are links back here when you've found your answers.

If you are a beginner I DON'T want you to buy this course yet because you're not ready.

If you're not sure how to control the things bulletted above I recommend my Ultimate Beginners Course first. Watch the video, make notes and practice the techniques. Copy the eBook Course onto a mobile device and take it with you and make sure you complete the exercises.

When you've practised and mastered that, your next step is to come back to the "7 Blocks" and learn how to think your way through all you've learnt and use it for almost any image situation. Quickly, effortlessly and easily.

After purchasing The 7 Building Blocks of Photography it was clear to see the results in my work almost immediately. Mike obviously has a great way of communicating and explaining the technique's required, not only how to get the most out of you, but out of your camera also!
Ok, you're not going to turn into the next David Bailey overnight but this course should help with putting the fundamental building blocks of photography in a logical order, making sense of what you're doing and why. A great course Mike, thank you.
Regards,
Paul Roberts.

The 7 Building Blocks of Photography is a great course to go through. Very practical, very easy to follow and more importantly, if you follow the clear and precise instructions, YOU will get the results you are after.
I have no affiliation with Mr Browne, but I do 100% recommend this course. Why? After downloading week 2 Let there be Light, 4 weeks later I had an assignment which required me to take photographs of dancing and musical performers in a theatre. The lighting was not great. Some situations required bright lighting and some, especially the Japanese drummers required, very dark, moody lighting.
I had the tools, the know how and the confidence to take on this assignment.
It was 6 days of brilliant experience, shooting both outside and inside and I am very proud of my results, and more importantly, the Cultural Centre that asked me to take the assignment were very pleased with the results.
So much, that the images are being added to their magazine.
Thanks so much Mike.
