Five new high definition (HD) camcorders have been launched by Samsung at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Three of the new devices feature internal solid state drives and can store 64GB, 32GB and 16GB of data. The large, medium and small devices can hold 12 hours, six hours and three hours of HD video respectively through the use of H.264 compression technology.

The inclusion of the solid state drives means the camcorders are lighter and more reliable as they don’t have moving parts that can break. They are also more durable and quieter. They also use a fraction of the power that a compatible HDD would use.

The cameras are known as HMX-H106, HMX-H104 and HMX-H105 and have 10x optical zoom and 2.2 megapixel CMOS imaging sensor. Each also has a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens. Shaky or blurry images are counteracted with image stabilization technology.

Samsung has also launched the HMX-H100 and the HMX-R10, which have 5x optical zoom and 2.7-inch LCD touchscreens. These camcorders can also take still pictures at 9 megapixels. These two models require separate memory cards.

The new camcorders will be available for sale in March and April 2009.
